Genzano modern history

Chiesa della Madonna Genzano di Lucania

We have reasons to believe that, the modern Genzano di Lucania modern history; or should I say the Era when they started to build the modern Genzano, as it exists today could have been the twelfth or the thirteen century, and this is what was happening then in the new would be Genzano: You see, about fifteen kilometres away in the castle of Monteserico, which is situated East-South-East of Genzano. This is an old castle built perhaps from the Norman’s sometimes long after the fall of the Roman Empire when they overrun Italy around the year 1000 plus; to this day no other building has been built near this castle except a small chapel. Sometimes people are not sure who build this castle, but I may have personal proof that this castle was built by the Normans, or at least I was lead to believe that it was built by the Normans, so let me tell you how I happen to know it.

Since I came to Australia I have worked in the building industry where I met this Frenchmen called Luis, we worked with the same firm for a few years and most times I and Luis worked together, so we knew each other well. Luis came to Australia when France left Algeria and the army of Algeria was dismantled so to speak, Luis was a captain in the army, so he had learned about many army things including army history. Anyhow let me come to the point of why Luis knowledge is important here. One day I was looking on the TV at the Tour of France, this stage was run in Normandy, so while I was looking at the country side I saw this castle in the background, which I could have sworn that it was exactly the same as the castle that I had been seeing thousands of times from my farm in southern Italy. So next time when I met Luis I asked him about it and surprise, surprise no sooner I mentioned the castle of Monteserico that he knew all about it, so he explained to me.

The Normans have only built two castles one in France and another in southern Italy, and from this castle of Monteserico they would dominate all their conquests of southern Italy. So here is the proof that Luis gave me, which is that the castle of Monteserico has been built from the Normans.

Now I have to say that even with Luis explanation about the castle of Monteserico, I am not sure if he was right to assume that the Normans built this castle, Luis story only shows us that this castle of Monteserico has been used from the Normans, because there are other stories about its origin; in fact there is even a story that this castle was built as a monastery in the beginning and then went through several changes and uses. It was built above a cave where indigenous people used to live a very long time ago.

Anyhow the fact remains that the Norman really had possessed the castle of Monteserico, because history shows us that in the X or XI century there indeed was a great battle around this castle won by the Norman, and therefore the Normans used this castle to dominate their conquests in southern Italy. One day I am going to find out more and make another post about it.

Genzano di Lucania history

-WELCOME!
You are invited,
-
This photo is today very old Genzano
Genzano di Lucania history
This is about Genzano history as I know it:
-
This post of Genzano di Lucania history is also being written because when I was at school in Genzano di Lucania, my teacher who was also a writer was writing a book about Genzano, I wish I had this book with me now, so that I could find many more things to say about Genzano, but this book is very hard to find these days, so I have to say only those things that I remember and
know.
So, let us begin; how Genzano came into existence is not exactly known today; but, the earliest and first written stories about Genzano, goes back to Roman times, or about when the Roman
Empire started to crumble, see the report below that I have found on the Internet, where it states when the Western Roman Empire collapsed.
The Western Roman Empire collapsed in 476 as Romulus Augustus was forced to abdicate to the Germanic warlord Odoacer.
But even before the Roman Empirecollapsed there is an event somewhere in the Roman history where they talk about a Genzano town, whether that Genzano is Genzano di Lucania or Genzano di Roma as we know them today is not clear, but anyhow there was a Genzano town during the Roman Empire, since I am talking about Genzano di Lucania, let us assume that it could well be Genzano di Lucania.
-
Apart from the facts that these posts are being written for my blogs' readers, I hope
also that my countrymen Genzanesi will come across these posts about Genzano
town and follow me and my blogs and also write a few comments.
www.comune.genzano.pz.it/
-------------------
Now, let me tell you another very old story about Genzano: this story that I am going to tell you here may well be after the time when the Roman Empire collapsed: And this story that I am
telling you here is about St. Antonio Abate who is still nowadays the patron
saint of Genzano, this story goes back to the fifth century AD or there about,
a sort of Genzano town already existed then and there was a war going on at
that time: The town of Genzano made resistance to the enemy aggression and its
demands, so it was put under siege. The enemy was furious and was going to
destroy Genzano; so they set their war machines ready for tomorrow to begin the
assault of Genzano and destroy it. The town of Genzano was in grave danger, but
that night the weather rained, snowed and became bitterly cold, it was so cold
that froze everything stiff, so cold and frozen were the war machines that they
could not be used or even moved, and the weather was cold for a very long time
afterward, until the enemy became tired and left; and that’s how Genzano was
saved from destruction. The day that this event happened was on the 17th
day of January, which is the day of St.
Antonio Abate according to the Roman Catholic calendar. See what I found on the
Internet about this great saint:
-
Anthony the Great or Antony the Great
(c. 251–356), (Coptic Ⲁⲃⲃⲁ Ⲁⲛⲧⲱⲛⲓ), also known as Saint Anthony, Anthony the
Abbot, Anthony of Egypt, Anthony of the Desert,
Anthony the Anchorite, Abba Antonius (Ἀββᾶς
Ἀντώνιος), and Father
of All Monks, was a Christian saint from Egypt, a prominent leader among the Desert
Fathers
. He is celebrated in many churches on his feast days:
30 January in the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Coptic Orthodox Church; 17 January in the Roman Catholic Church and the Coptic Catholic Church.
The biography of Anthony's life by Athanasius of Alexandria helped to spread
the concept of monasticism, particularly in Western Europe through Latin translations.
He is often erroneously considered the first monk, but as his biography and
other sources make clear, there were many ascetics before him. Anthony was,
however, the first known ascetic going into the wilderness, a geographical
shift that seems to have contributed to his renown.[4]
Anthony is appealed to against infectious diseases, particularly skin
diseases. "Saint Anthony's fire" has described different afflictions
including ergotism, erysipelas and shingles.
End of Internet report about Saint Anthony.
-
Now that I have explained who was
this great Saint Anthony, let me tell you how the story goes: The folks of
Genzano believe that this incredible happening of cold weather was due to
divine intervention through St. Antonio Abate: And this is the reason why St.
Antonio Abate was made Patron Saint and protector of Genzano; this belief about
Saint Anthony has lasted to the present time, and I have to ad that even today
when there is a problem in this town, let us say it has not rained for a long
time so rain is needed for the fields to
grow, the priest and the people soon take Sant’Antonio out in a procession through
the town and into the country, in the hope that Sant’Antonio will help to make
it rain. This is how the people of Genzano venerate this Saint.
Now let me go back to Genzano
history, for a very long time after this happening obove, and during the Dark
Ages there doesn’t seem to be any history written about Genzano, and therefore
nobody seems to know what has happened during that time.

Strage in Genzano di Lucania

The murder scene in Genzano di Lucania
I am afraid to say this, but this 2011 year ends in Genzano in a very sorry way. You see, there cannot be any joy around for a very long time, no matter which way you look at it, it does not look good. Christmas is supposed to be a peaceful and happy family gathering, and everybody should cherish the company of their friends and close relatives; but this year in Genzano di Lucania it has not happened because of a crazy man shooting other fellow citizens, and if some people have been able to put aside what has just happened in Genzano will be a small minority.
When such terrible things happen just at Christmas Eve one should be forgiven to thing that there is no God, otherwise why God let this horrible things happen one may ask for good reasons?
Listen! My heart cries to hear this horrible news; you see this is the town that I came from and I have always thought that nothing violent would ever happen it this friendly town where everybody knows everybody, so to thinking of murdering people in this town is impossible, but that was/is until today, because today has happened something so horrendous that has changed everything, as a triple murder has happened, and it has happened just on Christmas Eve, so what sort of Christmas will the inhabitant of Genzano have this Christmas?
I am afraid to say, but this Christmas will be a very said one for most Genzanesi, just to think that one of their own has killed three people, it is incomprehensible one can only think and say that the killer has lost his mind, what else can it be?
The killer is 77 years old that means that he is an old man and he should have known better but he didn’t. I have to say that I have talked to the killer a couple of times when I were in Genzano about thirty years ago and he seemed all right then, but when I think about it I have always known that he was a man that would easily turn to violence; So what sort of man is he one may ask?
He is a skinny man of average height very alert and sensitive, he was/is lame I don’t know exactly why or what happened to him when he was young, but somehow I know that he was usually restless even when he was a kid, and as the story goes he peeked up one of those unexploded petard too soon after it fell, but the petard exploded and so he was wounded and became lame. He happened to do that because he belongs to a family that are specialized in firework, and that is why he happened to be there when that unexploded petard fell. Notwithstanding this incident he continued to work at the family fireworks factory and this is what he has mostly done all his life, except perhaps when he migrated to Australia for a few years in the seventies, this is how I can describe this heartless killer, Ettore Bruscella.
You see I have migrated to Australia from this Genzano town when I was young, and I am still in Australia today, therefore we are wondering today to which family the victim belong, there are too many Menchise families in this town, so we wonder whether we can be related to them, there are no description on the Italian news for us old Italians to understand that, you see we would like to see written the names of the parents of the victims, so that we could recall who they are, or a given name that some families have, or perhaps even where they lived or their farm possessions, just to give us a better idea who they are. So we who are away from our native town are left wondering about this fact of life.
Anyhow I am going to publish what I have written already, and by doing that I will be informing my countryman what has happened, and I also hope that some of my countryman will let us know a few more details about this terrible event, so that we may learn the facts as they are.
--
Who are the victim’s relatives we wonder?
As I have already said above, for lack of more detailed information, at this stage we don’t know exactly who the victims are, even though we know their names, we don’t know to which family they belong, they could even be some of our relatives who know. For us that have been away from our native town of Genzano for 50 years or more, it is near impossible to figure out who the victims are, just by using what we have learned from the Italian news, but we would like to know anyhow, so, I and my wife who is also from Genzano have tried to assume to which family the victims could belong, so at the moment we have assumed that the victims may indeed be some distant relatives, I am saying distant as they may fall in that category when we start thinking that we are not related anymore because the link is too far back.
Although I am a Menchise I believe that they are not related to me because of this name, but they could be related to me in a different way. For instance I assume that the victims could be related to me in this way on my mother side, starting from me and working my way back I can see; me, my mother, my grandma and my grandma parents Ceruzzi, from here I could go forward to the present generation of the victims. So, from my grandma parents Ceruzzi who had a large extended family including my great uncle Leonardo who had I believe a son Gerardo who once was vice mayor in the town of Genzano in the fifties and a daughter Marietta who married a Menchise and had a family including Leonardo Menchise who is the husband and father of the victims, this is what we believe they are. I wonder how close we are to the truth.
Here I have to say again that this is only an assumption, or a discussion if you like to call it, that we have had in order to find out who they are?

WELCOME!

Genzano the old town
In Southern Italy and also in many European countries, lots of medieval towns were built on a rugged hill, or something similar for reason of safety, as we all know that in ancient times and in the Middle Ages towns had to be built in such positions, in order to make it hard for the enemy to get into town, and easy for the inhabitants to defend the town from aggressions.
Therefore even today the very old and partly still existing Genzano of the thirteenth century or there about, is built on a strip of land which is situated between two chasms, and these chasms are situated at the edge of a high plateau 588 meters above sea level; and the modern Genzano is a continuation of the ancient part of this town, which has kept steadily growing onto the high plateau itself up to the present days. Of course the town of Genzano has existed for a very long time before that, as we will find out as we write about Genzano, but there is not a lot of physical left to talk about it today.
In the beginning, because of the nature of the terrain of the high plateau which was sandy at one end, allowed the rainwater to erode the soil easily away, forming two chasms of considerable depth; which by memory I would consider them to be 30 meter plus in depth. So Genzano that part of the ancient town was built on the remains of the edge of an old high plateau, which the rainwaters had slowly dug and taken away the soil downstream, leaving a high strip of land which was narrowing till the chasms met. And upon this triangular and narrow piece of high land, the inhabitant of Genzano began to build their own town. There is also a story of who started to build Genzano, but that I have to leave for another time.
Anyhow before they built their own town, they must have been living somewhere else, and they must have overgrown the place where they were living in, and for this reason they started building their own town. Now, the only place that they could have been living in was in the caves in the chasm, which they themselves as the first and permanent inhabitants of this region had dug in the walls of the chasms
The walls of the chasms being Tufaceous and very compact, and sandy in nature with a few layers of sandstone at different levels, it had been possible for the first inhabitant to dig in the walls of the chasms and make a cave. And the caves although they are large they are reasonably safe from cave-ins; an average cave could be 6 or 7 meters wide, and 6 or 7 meters high at the entrance, and some twenty meters long becoming a bit smaller at the far end.
Now if you stop and think just for a moment, how hard it must have been to dig in the walls of the chasms in order to make caves, and then also to carry all the soil outside and away from the caves, even if they used to dump the soil at the bottom of the chasms, and then wait for a good torrential rain to take away the soil downstream, it would really be a mammoth of a job to dig those caves.
So here I can easily say and demonstrate that life is and always will be a struggle, as it was a struggle even then to dig those caves. And I believe that perhaps life then was much harder than nowadays. Because to hand excavate those caves must have been hard work indeed, and it must have taken them ages and millions of men’s hours, as there are lots of caves in the chasms, in fact it could be that there are one hundred caves in Genzano territory. Now because all this happened a very long time ago, nobody these days seems to know who they were the first inhabitant of the chasms, or where they came from, and how many of these caves they made in the beginning.
They might have been just a group of shepherds grazing their herds, and having found a sort of shelter in the chasm, from the cold winds or rain in winter times, they stopped there and tried to improve this natural shelter; so they started to dig these caves for themselves and for their flocks. Or they could have been people that were fleeing away from their enemies, and having found a sort of shelter in the shape of the chasms, they stopped there and made it their home. Really they could be both, and perhaps even more different groups of people.
Today one of the chasms is still called the Greek chasm from the elders of Genzano, and this means that at least sometime in the past people from Greece have lived there, or owned one of the chasms since they were living there. About the Greek people there is still another story, which is somehow different in nature from what I am trying to say at this moment, so I will have to come back to it later on, when I am ready to tell you the story of the Greek chasm and the Madonna story.
But now I would like to tell you, about when the inhabitant of the caves started to build their own houses on this strip of land at the top of the chasms; which later on would become the town of Genzano, and which was named very likely after one of their leaders, or perhaps it is indeed an ancient name, as I am going to tell you in my next hub. Therefore the time that Genzano came into existence as a town for the first time nobody knows but in my next hub that I am going to call, Genzano history, I am going to describe what I believe happened. So, see you there.

The town Hall called Municipio

GENZANO IS THE TOWN I CAME FROM
-
My dear readers, we all may be born with our own destiny, or at least some of us may believe we do, perhaps just because we would like to believe that it is so. You see for this reason I believe that somehow my own destiny has played a part and has taken me away from my native town, so today I am going to talk about my town and, Genzano is the town I came from. Some people may say that since you left your native town for your own personal reasons, you would forget about your native town altogether, and you would not say a word about it since this town could not give you what you wanted when you were young.
But it does not work like that at all, because wherever you are born and grow up it is going to be your native town for the rest of your life. You see every one of us is proud of its native town or country, if we were not proud of our heritage we would be unworthy of ourselves, so, I hope that you my dear readers understand why I would like to talk about Genzano my native home town. After all Genzano di Lucania is really a good town that one could be proud of to come from, so let us talk about Genzano di Lucania.
-
THE TOWN I CAME FROM GENZANO DI LUCANIA
But it is also correct to say Genzano di Basilicata.
-
My dear readers, allow me to describe to you the town where I was born, lived when I was young and later on I had to leave, so that I could come to Australia: I would like to talk about this town so that you could understand the ways that we used to live in this town, at the time when I was young; after all we want also compare the ways of living of those time with today’s ways of living: I would like to do that you may perceive and feel the story in the same way and depth as I have perceived and felt it, while I was living my young life at that place and at that particular time. As I was saying the town that I am talking about here is the town where I was born and lived my youth before I came to Australia, its name is Genzano di Lucania.
Therefore let me go back to the time when I was young, so that I could describe to you the town and their costumes, so that, you may be able to understand the ways that these people have lived their lives for centuries; And therefore the reason why they were living the way they were living at the time when I was young. Now because I was born there I was caught in their own ways of living, which left a lot to be desired for, if one compares it to the ways that we live our lives in Australia nowadays, and also the rest of the western world.
The town where I came from happens to be situated in Southern Italy; its name is ‘Genzano’ but its full name is ‘Genzano Di Lucania’, only to distinguish it from ‘Genzano di Roma’. But when we talk about this town, we just talk about Genzano, and this causes a curious fact of life here in Australia, because to most people living in Australia the name of ‘Genzano’ sounds very much like ‘Cinzano’ which is a famous wine brand. So they start asking questions whether this town is the town where such a good wine originated. But unfortunately ‘Genzano’ the town which I have come from has got nothing to do with that famous wine brand. Although we had and still have some good vineyards in the town territory, and they make good wines, and here I have to add that also my family owned some vineyards at the time when I was young, from which we used to make good wines too. The wine that our family made from our vineyards was mainly for our own family use, but usually it was more than our family could use, so we would sell the extra wine locally.
But talking about wines and wine making, it makes me think of something very unusual and scenic in this town, which people from outside town and not familiar with this sort of set up would be amazed to see.
Now, if I were to say that the people of Genzano make their wines inside cellars, which are large caves, dug in the walls of a chasm, it would certainly leave too much to your imagination, and you may be forgiven to imagine that there are cavemen too living in these caves. And indeed there were some sort of cavemen in earlier times, and some of them used to live in these caves, but they were not real cavemen, as they were just people who later on became the first inhabitants of Genzano town, but I am sure that some of them used to live in these caves in ancient times.
So now let me go back one more step in time; to those ancient times when people used to live in the caves, before they built the town of Genzano: And here my dear readers I would like to describe in general terms, if you don’t mind me telling you the ancient nature of these caves, the terrain where they stand, and perhaps take an educated guess why these caves were made there in the first place, who made them and why they have been made there.
But I believe that I have already written enough in this post, I promise you that I will come back to write about is soon. See you then.

Cavallina fountain
Cavallina twilight dream

What I have written in my last post called, Genzano Cavallina twilight was real life happening, but what I am going to tell you next is only a dream, but you can say that this Cavallina twilight dream that I am going to tell you belongs to the twilight zone also, just like my story about chasing the white rabbit belongs to the twilight zone, as it is hard to believe that these things happen, even though they did really happen.
Anyhow, let me tell you my Cavallina twilight dream, because what I dreamed about is very strange to say the least; You see, I was dreaming of an old person who wanted to teach me something at this fountain Cavallina. I know that now you are saying that this is a stupid reason just to tell you one of my dreams, but before you judge me, I and my dream just read what I have to say, because it could be interesting especially if you believe that dreams sometimes have some useful meanings, as I found for myself.
In order to understand this dream better I need to explain to you that this old person might have been the spirit my great, great, great grandma who lived not far from this fountain, and who had used this fountain during all her life, perhaps she had lived through one of this contagious disease that require washing everything properly to avoid contamination and this is what she wanted to teach me.
When I dreamed this dream I was in Australia in my late forties, but in my dream I was only a boy about ten or eleven years old, (I suppose that this difference in age in the dream wanted to show me that the old lady was very ancient spirit compared to me), so, this very old lady was standing beside me at this fountain Cavallina, strange as it may seem I had taken some dishes and other eating utensil from the old house where my grandma lived to wash at the fountain; the old lady was telling me to wash everything under the first spout of the fountain and keep everything in the first bay near this first spout, so that they would not be contaminated, and so I did; but as you know sometimes dreams are very strange and suddenly I found that some of my dishes were in the second bay of the fountain, so I started to worry about it, because the old lady had said not to put any dishes in the second bay, otherwise they would be contaminated. At this point of time, the old lady became aware that I was worried and said not to worry about it, I was protesting to her saying that you said that the other bays are contaminated, and she said don’t worry just for this time and you will soon know why.
Then I woke up and realised that it was only a dream, so I understood the old lady that I did not have to worry about the dishes in the second bay of the fountain just for that time, because it was only a dream and the dishes even though had been contaminated I was not going to use them anyhow, just because they were only in my dreams, and they were thousands of miles away, in another era and in another place. I believe that the old lady was one of my forbear who popped up in my dreams to teach me a lesson about food contamination or something like that, and she did in my Cavallina twilight dream.

Genzano, Cavallina twilight
-
My mother grandma and other elders kept telling us not to go alone to this fountain when it was dark, but anyhow let me tell you a bit more about this fountain Cavallina; yes I would like to tell you some stories that I personally know about this fountain, not only at the time when I was young but also later on. My dear readers in my last post I have been talking about the town where I came from and its ancient fountain called Cavallina, now because I was talking about Genzano town and its fountain I have remembered a particular dream that I had about this fountain and also other creepy stories about this fountain.
So I hope you would like to hear them.
As I have said, when I was young my mother grandma and other elders kept telling us not to go alone to this fountain when it was dark, because some people had seen ghostly sights; but if you had to go there not to go alone and go as early as possible after dusk, so even when we were coming back from the fields from that side of town, and we had to go past this fountain we had to be careful as soon as it was dark, if you had to water your horse or donkey or whatever animals you had to water you had to do that during the day or early before dusk. I have to say that there were also some other unspeakable activities that went on near this fountain before dusk, but about these activities of dumping human excrement I will tell you later on in another hub, because now we are talking about ghostly things at this fountain at night. To cut a long story short I am going to tell you what happened to me and some of my friends; as you all know young men in their later teen are not easily scared and they start thinking that these ghost stories are not true, so, I and a few friends were going to pay a visit to this fountain Cavallina at night; so, one late evening we went to see this fountain Cavallina and there was nobody to be seen, we kept going when we saw a white rabbit and soon we gave chase as we wanted to grab this rabbit, not for fun we wanted to eat the rabbit as meat was expensive those days. There were four of us giving chase to this white rabbit, but the rabbit kept escaping us, but we kept running after it and the rabbit was taking us very close to a ravine which had a drop of over ten meter and any one that would fall down there would instantly end up dead.
Anyhow suddenly one of us said; what rabbit that is not a rabbit? Suddenly we realised that we were not chasing a rabbit at all, but we were chasing a ghost or an evil spirit that war tying to take us over the ravine to kill us to us with him. It is said that ghost or evil spirits lose their full power when people realise that they are a supernatural apparition, so, in this case we were lucky when we realised that what we were chasing was not a rabbit at all, it was a spirit, and at least this is what we were made to believe then.
What I have written above was real life happening, but what I am going to tell you next is only a dream, but you can say that this dream that I am going to tell you belongs to the twilight zone also, just like my story about chasing the white rabbit belongs to the twilight zone.
